Women are losing faith on our society due to the increasing number of crimes on them. Was my country not respecting women folk earlier? Why off late this disrespectful culture has been followed? Was not respecting women a basic principle of Sanatana Dharma? How is it that we have forgot that the place where women are respected and adored there Divinity resides?
Once at a function to felicitate the renowned carnatic vocalist M.S. Subbukakshmi fondly known as “Amma” C. Rajagopalachari, the last Governor-General of India was asked to do the favors. On the stage were present Sadashivam, husband of M.S.Subbalakshmi and Krishnamurthy who were both the co-founders of a famous Tamil Magazine. Before awarding the citation the organizers requested C. Rajagopalachari (Rajaji) to garland to M.S. ‘Amma’. The garland was given to Rajaji who took the garland and went straight to Amma and sought her permission to garland her. Amma did not find anything wrong and agreed. He then turned to Sadasivam, her husband and sought his permission. Sadasivam also gave his consent and all the dignitaries on the dais also expressed their approval. When the whole auditorium was expecting Rajaji to garland to the classical singer, he walked over to the microphone. Addressing the dignitaries on the dais and her fans, he began, “I requested for M.S Amma’s permission to garland her without hesitation she gave her assent. Her spouse Sadasivam gave his nod too likewise Krishnamurthy and other dignitaries too approved of my garlanding M.S. Subbalakshmi, but the Dharma that I follow does not permit me to garland any woman other than my wife. I am sorry!” He then walked over to Sadasivam and requested him to garland his better half.
From the stage of hesitancy to even touch the other man's wife, sister or daughter in public to the mindset of trying to compensate monetarily for misbehaving with a women in private is this what civilization has taught us? Just garlanding a woman in public would not have created a chaos but look at how woman at work place are being treated. Those who are civilized and educated are misbehaving with woman in recent time. What is it that we are lacking? How could people in earlier times know their limits? Earlier people had acquaintance with scriptures which taught them how to live harmoniously; ironically the so called educated also call the puranas are cock and bull stories how do the younger generation show interest to know how to live by reading them?
Rajaji who has written Ramayana and Mahabharata might have known of an incidence that happened after Lanka Dahana (burning of Lanka). Ravana orders his men to set the tail of Hanuman on fire. The couriers start to tie oil immersed cloth to the tail; Hanuman starts to extend the length of his tail. The men start wrapping the extended tail with the more and more cloth. At one point the entire cloth heap got exhausted while uncovered tail remained. Hence they start wrapping the tail with curtains, towels, dhotis and whatever cloth they found. Yet the tail could not be covered and then there is no more cloth left. Men in Lanka start to disrobe themselves in order to cover the tail with the cloth they had on them. Nonetheless there was no enough cloth to cover the tail.
Worried and insulted Ravana asked his men to disrobe the women folk to cover the tail with their cloth. On hearing this Hanuman stops extending the tail so that women are not disrobed publicly. It is the kind of respect one has to have towards women even though they are from in the land of an evil, Hanuman never failed to keep women at high regards. This is a lesson from puranas which teaches how a cultured person should behave with women folk in his vicinity.
