A boy who was working in the paddy field was bit by a snake in the leg and the neurotoxin venom affected his nervous system and he died. A worker who was nearby caught the snake and brought it to the weeping mother of the boy and told, “Here is the snake that bit your son shall I kill it” The mother said, “Now that I have lost my son, does killing this snake bring him back to life? Let it go”. Mother was displaying the Sattvaguna (compassionate nature) in her by understanding the intricate design of Karma. But the man does not heed to her words and swirls the snake and bangs it on the nearby rock.
Now the spirit of the snake started to talk to the man thus:
“Oh, evil man what have you done, I did not bite the boy looking at him as a proposed meal or out of revenge, I felt insure that the boy might step on me, it was only my defensive instinct. If the boy had to die at that specific time what should I do? If you have to blame anyone for the boy’s death it is Yama, God of Death.”
God of Death who was listening to this conversation appeared before the spirit of the snake and the man. He was taken aback by the accusation of the snake, He said “Oh snake, your allegation does not make sense, every living being which has taken birth has to die some day. The statistic of birth and death of every individual is with Kalapurusha, the Divine personification of Time. When He tells me that the time has come to separate the body of the boy and the soul, I do the job. In this intricate design I, the snake and the man are just the instruments. It is Divine person of Time who is responsible for the death of the boy. Entire creation comes under the His rule, hence He is to answer for the death of the snake. I have done only my job, which happens to be my Dharma”
The explanation given by God of Death though was convincing on the surface did have a wider qualm which Divine Person of Time wanted to clarify, He appeared immediately before them. He said, “Oh God of Death, the reason behind the death of the boy is his past Karma, not me nor you nor the snake. Everybody in this universe fall prey to their own Karma. They experience happiness and remorse as per their past karmas. This boy in his previous birth was a hunter who had put his hand into an anthill and caught a snake and ripped it to eat it. So it was the time for him to reap his own deeds.”
The man asked Divine person of Time, “Oh Kalapurusha, I have a doubt. If the boy had to die of snake bit and if this snake has bit the boy for that purpose then why should I have killed it?”
Kalapurusha told, “This snake was destined to die at that specific time and at that specific place by getting crushed to the rock but for that event to happen, it need not have bitten the boy. For its death you are the reason you smashed it to the rock. Now you may ask if the boy had to be bit the snake, the snake had to be present there. Here is the catch listen carefully; it was not destined that this particular snake has to bite the boy it could have been any snake for the matter. But this snake took the initiative acting according to its Gunas (nature) and bit the boy. And even the death of the snake by getting crushed to the rock was to happen, but was not destined that it needed your involvement. If only you had taken the advice of the mother of the boy and let the snake go it would have met with death by some other means and you would have never come into the intricate design. But your Rajoguna (passionate and aggressive nature) made you act without heeding to the mother of the boy or your intellect and you killed the snake…Death was the fruit which the boy had reaped as a reward for his previous life deed, while act of biting by the snake and you smashing it against the rock are the seed that were sown now by you and the snake to reap later................”
