Maa Saraswati is depicted as playing a veena with her two hands and in one hand she holds rosary which symbolizes concentration of mind and in the other she keeps Vedas, the powerhouse of Wisdom. Hence She is the Goddess of Knowledge.

Maa Saraswati is the consort of creator Brahma who with all the knowledge He has creates this Universe.  She is the one who bestows both Vijnana Vidya (Scientific Knowledge) and Kala Vidya (Skillful Knowledge). She is the one who shines our Buddhi (Intellect) which is related to Ajna Chakra and also commands over our Vak (Speech) which is linked to Vishuddhi Chakra.

The purity in her white saree symbolizes the knowledge that she graces on us which is devoid of Agrahana (non apprehension) and Anyathagrahana (misapprehension). Hamsa, the swan which is nearby has the Neer-Ksheer Viveka. This Neer-Ksheer Viveka according to Hindu philosophy is an ability of the seeker who picks up the positive trait from the mixture of positive and negative forces. Hindu Puranas eloquent that when water is mixed with milk the whole liquid appears to be like milk and a common man fails to distinguish if the milk is pure or adulterated with water. No individual has the capability to separate water from the milk and drink pure milk from the mixture. Puranas claims that Hamsa (Swan) can drink milk leaving behind the water content.

Though there is no scientific evidence to prove if the bird has the ability to do so this can be treated as a metaphor. Hamsa is a mythological bird depicting the Soul which has the ability to discriminate the real from the unreal, truth from untruth. Hamsa in Sanskrit has two words Aham and Sa, Aham is me or I and Sa is Him, together the word Hamsa becomes I am Him. This is same as what the Vedanta philosophy that says the Individual Consciousness “I” is Jivatma and “Him” is the Paramatma or Absolute Consciousness. Therefore Hamsa is the merger of both Individual Consciousness and Absolute Consciousness. Initially a seeker does not have the ability to distinguish truth from untruth as the two get mixed harmoniously like milk and water. If the seeker has his mind always on Maa Saraswati like the swan that is always near Her, he will definitely get the ability to separate the truth from untruth and realize the Truth alone.

On this day of Ashvija masa Shukla paksha Saptami of Navaratri, Maa Saraswati is worshiped with immense devotion. Children perform pooja to their books and musicians revere their musical instruments on this day. Pleased with their devotion Maa Saraswati blesses all her children who are in pursuit of Skill Development.

Om Vakdeviyai cha Vidhmahe
Virinji Pathniyai cha Dheemahe
Thanno Vani Prachodayath

Om, Let me meditate on the Goddess of Speech,
Oh, wife of Lord Brahma, provide me higher Intellect,
And let Goddess Vani illuminate my Mind.
