A Jeevi (Individual) takes up a physical body due to the Vasanas (Impressions). It is because of them that mind exists. These Vasanas are dormant in the mind and surfaces when necessary. They are the cause of the bondage of Samsara. When the Vasanas are annihilated the mind will cease to exist just as the flame douse off when the oil in the lamp is ended.
Also as the caterpillar is bound in its own cocoon, so does the Jeevi get engrossed in web of Samsara by his own impressions. The notion that Samsara is a prison is projected out by the example of the self-imprisonment of the caterpillar which winds its own cocoon around its own body. Making it very difficult for it to find an escape route when in pupal stage.
Mind is not an imperative matter, but happens to be existing due to impressions that are stuck to it. Let us suppose there is a mirror and I place it before the sun, if the sun ray is incident ray a reflected sunlight falls on the wall towards which I hold the mirror. What is the cause for the reflected ray? Is it not the lead behind the mirror? That lead is what I presume to be the impressions that are stuck over the past births on the mind which was at the beginning a crystal clear glass plane. The lead behind make the clear glass plane act as a mirror. Reflected light on the wall is the Jeeva Chaitanya (Individual Consciousness) which needs a physical body. If the mind is crystal clear like the glass plane without any impressions then the sun rays passes through it without any reflection. Here sun ray is the Brahma Chaitanya (Absolute Consciousness). Therefore Vasanas and Punarjanma (Rebirth) becomes an unbroken bond and the cycle of birth and death rolls on without an end.
Now the question is how to make the mind impression less? Vasanas or impressions are weaved to form a mind hence if impressions are thread our mind is a cloth. If the thread is towed out, there is no cloth at all. Unfortunately with self-centeredness and wantons we are knitting more thread to the existing cloth rather than pulling the thread out.
To stop new Vasanas one has to develop Vairagya (Dispassion). Life is a celebration, a given opportunity to excel that we have earned. Dispassion is misunderstood to be running away from life and avoid all comforts and fortunes, it is not true. Due to past Karma Phalas if one deserves to enjoy comforts and fortunes he has to put up with them at the same time he got to tolerate miseries and misfortunes also. But one need not yearn for comforts and fortune going head over heals to obtain them by unlawful means or wish them as the result of whatever is done. In other words work done with non-doership attitude may help not adding to existing Vasanas.
The already existing impressions could be annihilated when the mind is not let to flip flop a lot. The flip flop is due to the skeptical attitude on the Truth. This skepticism dissolves with Atma Vichara (Who am I?). Atma Vichara induces Atma Jnana (Knowledge of Self) and the misconceptions of “mine” & “your” get destroyed. The Jeeva Chaitanya (Individual Consciousness) which stood as a separate entity gets merged with the Brahmaa Chaitanya (Absolute Consciousness) at this stage. The Jeevi becomes Jeevan Mukta (Realised Soul) even when dwelling in the physical body.
