A teacher has to have the knack of getting his student into confidence. Students do not easily agree to the opinions put forth by the teacher. A leader, be it in the political arena or in corporate sector also have a tough time to convince his people about his opinions. This is because there is difference of opinion when there is more than one involved, why even a same person could have different opinion depending on the situations. This difference of opinion brings friction and this friction puffs up the ego and to prove the supremacy it veils the intellect. And then there is that adamant nature which comes in the way to accept the opinion even if it has substance.
A systematic way of dealing with the problems related to difference of opinion is shown in our ancient scriptures by using Catur Upayas (Four Tactics). Catur upaya give us the four political methodologies namely Sama, Dana, Bheda and finally as a last resort Danda. The difference of opinion can be rectified by either of the first three and the last and the final tactic is not required unless it is the height of adamant nature portrayed.
In the first tactic of Sama an appeasement method is used. Though it might look to be a diplomatic way on the surface in reality it is also a way of motivating or inspiring by praising the past works or the good nature or the wisdom one has. Here it is not words of flattery but it is just reflecting the personality of the person that he is. Sama is not bluffing about the characters that are not in the person but highlighting the best of qualities and remanding the person of the ability he possesses. When Hanuman was asked to leap over the sea to Lanka he felt that he could not do the task, then it was Jambavan who reminded him about his childhood feat of leaping to the Sun think it to be a big juicy fruit.
If the appeasement method does not work the very next method to use is Dana. It is the carrot in the carrot and stick theory where a stubborn mule is lured to move on with the carrot stuck in the front of the carriage. One should not conclude this method to be that of bribing. Bribe is offered mostly to get an unlawful work done. Here it is just an incentive that is offered to get the task done, hence it cannot be considered as bribery.
When motivating and inspiring do not work and incentives also do not make effect then a firm step is taken. That is Bheda. Bheda is not comparing one with the other or causing a divide and rule situation it is only to sow a seed of dissent. It is an art of selective discrimination and differentiation in order to settle issues or to bring out the best in a person. It should not be over done which might create friction and mutual suspicion between the members of assessment. Just a touch of it is enough to bring mutual cooperation and trust.
As a last resort Danda is the use of force. When all the above three tactics does not work and it is extreme only then one has to consider the use of force. As I personally feel there is a least chance of using the last tactic if there is a cordial relationship between the two and the sensitivity is upheld at all times. Unfortunately due to stress and other factors some employ this tactic first and make the whole exercise is futile.
This may be an old technique but works perfectly even today. It is better to use soft words and genuine sweetness to clarify and solve the problems first. These four tactics are used to discipline a child as discipline is absolutely essential and can be developed in a child at its early age. It should never be considered as violence, but should be looked at as a stringent method to dealwith the necessity of both defense and discipline.
Like I wouldn't like to be a cop, I wouldn't like to be a teacher as per'se.
