“Success of actions depends equally on destiny and Self efforts. Of these two, destiny is the expression of the efforts made in the previous life.”
“We are said to be what our desire is. As our desire is, so is our will. As our will is, so are our acts. As we act, so we become.”
“Any act disapproved by the society must never be practiced.”
“By practicing what is prohibited and by not controlling the senses an individual commits crime.”
“Human beings are, by nature addicted to sinful deeds.”
“Decisions should be made according to edict, uninfluenced by greed or anger.”
“Of all deeds one aspires, like sacrifices, rituals, control of senses, non-violence, charity or study of the Vedas, this one thing is the highest duty: that one should seek the Self through Yoga.”
“When you hear about the Self, meditate upon the Self, and finally realize the Self, you come to understand everything in life.”
“Entered into the peace that brings complete self-control and perfect patience an individual sees himself in everyone and everyone in himself.”
These are the Words of Wisdom (WoW) that could be seen in Brihadaranyaka (Forest of Wisdom) Upanishad made by Sage Yajnavalkya.
There is a discussion between Yajnavalkya and his wife Maitreyi in this Upanishad which is very interesting. Sage Yajnavalkya says to Maitreyi that he wish to go on Vanaprastasrama (retirement to forest). He tells her he wishes to divide his property between his two wives Katyayani and Maitreyi. He assures her she can live a comfortable life with his property but yet he confesses that he cannot assure her Eternal Happiness. Maitreyi question him of what use is the material wealth which does not give Eternal Happiness.
Maitreyi decides to give the property to his other wife and wants the sage to share his knowledge with her. Yajnavalkya imparts her knowledge of true nature of the Self, the universe and Brahman. He tells her that Self is pure subject, the knower, which cannot be described through any form of known means of communication. Then he goes on to explain the relationship between the husband and wife. According to the learned sage, the real or eternal Lovebetween husband and wife is due to the love between the two subtle bodies. When that subtle body is manifested in a body, it is encircled with the effects of names, forms and actions due to the various organs and sense objects of the body. The Supreme Love of between the two is possible only, if the physical barriers and hurdles due to ignorance developed by the forces of sense objects on the subtle body is overcome by unadulterated intellect. In fact, the real love between the husband and wife goes beyond just the physical relationships.
If only the husband and wife of this generation understand this they do not used the three words “I LOVE YOU” for their convenience just to appraise each other. When there is true love from within every act that they perform for each other will resonate those three words in silence. With such an understanding there would have been less of separation and divorce….isn’t it?????
Today the Kartika Masa, Shukla Paksha, Saptami is the appearance day of that great learned Sage Yajnavalkya. I take this opportunity to bow to that great seer who has given mankind the Forest of Wisdom.
