I have been fortunate enough to have interacted with many fellow seekers here and have enhanced my understanding on subject related to every topic. There have been many discussions I have had and I have read many discussions where opinions are shared on certain subject posted in a write up. Though every thought cannot be agreed upon just for the sake of agreement it has to be countered so that the air is cleared and then the counter debate always looks as a healthy sign of knowing things.
At times discussions could take a turn into an argument where one person gives an appropriate opinion and is countered by an equally strong and opposite argument. Both can be right in their own ways and hence the argument and counter argument will never fade if it remains healthy. Suppose a person out of lack of proper knowledge on the subject tries to argue for the sake of argument it is then the discussion becomes bland. Arguing for the sake of argument does not take anyone further in the process of knowing.
In certain occasions an argument just gets heated up and groups are formed and there is attack and counter attack by the two groups and the dissection is now just aimed at pinning down either of the group. But one must understand that by winning the argument one is not victorious and the truth in the subject matter does not change. Also it is said that never argue with a fool.
Learned men say, “Never argue with a fool, onlookers may not be able to tell the difference.”
Taking the cue from the elders if one remains silent when the argument is not on the correct track, the other person takes advantage and showers irrelevant and baseless allegation on the person who is silent. Hence it is wise to credit the honor of winning the argument to the person who is arguing for the sake of argument. Just like how this King taking the advice of the old and wise minister does in this story.
There was a parrot which found a gold coin and was excited. With the gold coin between its beaks it went to the King’s palace and started dancing before the King and shouting loudly, “I have a gold coin do you have one?”
The King smiled at the little creature and kept quite. The parrot went on dancing and shouting and the King got irritated and ordered the guards to catch hold of the bird and snatch the gold coin from it.The gaurds obeyed the orders of the King.
Parrot which was silent for a few minutes started shouting, “The King of this land envious of my gold coin has snatched it from my beak.” This made the king even more furious and he shouted to his guards to throw back the coin at the bird. The guards obeyed the orders of the King and threw back the coin at the parrot. Collecting the coin back in its beak the parrot started dancing again and shouted, “The King of this country is afraid of me so he gave back the coin to me”.
The parrot was so thrilled and overwhelmed by its own wits that it went on mocking the King. The King could not take it any more he rose from the throne with the sword held up high to sever the parrots head. The wise old minister who had trampled the odds of life by his wisdom walked up to the King. He whispered something gently into the King’s ears. After the old minister took his seat, the King clapped and asked everyone present in the assembly to appreciate the bird for entertaining them all with a round of applause and finally he rewarded the parrot with another gold coin.
With its ego badly battered the bird left the court without another word. Everyone in the court was curious to know what the wise old minister had whispered in the King’s ears. The old minister had just remained the King that by winning an argument one is not victorious…….!
